Happy Hour On Hennepin Avenue

A quiet morning smoke break on Hennepin Avenue. I was watching the Ken Burns’ three-part series on Prohibition last night and learned the origin of the term ‘Skid Row‘; it comes from Skid Road in Vancouver or Seattle where the loggers would ‘skid’ the logs from the docks to the lumber mills. It was home to hard-working and hard-drinking workmen. It eventually became the term for the rough vice-riddled neighborhoods in big cities like Minneapolis. Eventually the city planners in the 60′s demolished our skid row and put in the cold boring buildings all along the area north of Washington at Hennepin. They destroyed a lot of really interesting buildings as well including the Metropolitan Building. This photo is of The Gay 90′s, which was on the edge of the area and managed to survive the do-gooders and their wrecking ball.

Pontiac

If you don't wax your car for a real long time, you can have a finish just like this! The combination of chrome and deteriorating finish remind me of the omnipresent scorched patina in the Star Wars universe.

Just a little something for those of you who get up early for this day of savings. I however, am staying in bed.

Minneapolis Skyline at Sundown

Every photographer in Minneapolis has to have this shot. If you go looking, you'll figure out where to stand, in fact, it's delightfully obvious. The first time I went looking and found the location, it was like finding a geocache or and Easter egg.

Purina Mill on Hiawatha Demolition

A few days back I went on an Urban Exploration of the Hiawatha industrial corridor with Dusty. We found a delightful Industrial Wonderland of crumbling delights. This next series is for all you post-industrial, post-apocalyptic zombieland junkies. Oh, and railroad buffs.

Caged in, Dan, Rob and Mitch enjoy the evening wind atop the 31st-floor open-air observatory of the grand Foshay Tower.

Twins Game from Foshay

From high above Minneapolis, the Foshay observation deck affords a spectacular view of all the buildings taller than it. It's surprising how little of the surrounding area can be seen from there. See the bright light poking out around the left of the IDS Tower? that's the new Twins Stadium. Well, some of it, at least.

Breakfast at Tiffany's

The only thing better than Breakfast at Tiffany's is Lunch at The Local. While out on photo safari with Rob & Dan, we stopped at The Local for lunch. Every Thursday over the summer, the Minneapolis Farmer's Market sets up downtown on Nicollet. Under the Skyway between 9th and 10th is one of my clients, Tollefson Family Pork. Stop by for a free sample!
