Lakeside Wildfllower
The CDPB Theme for August is ‘Bright colors’. I chose this photo since it’s not and obvious brightly-colored object, but an effect I enjoy. When the sky is overcast, colors are relatively more vivid, something I learned from my painting instructor Joe Paquet. I shot this on the Lake of the Isles shoreline at 5:45 in the morning in the cool overcast morning. Click here to view thumbnails for all participants in the theme day.

Synthetic Baseball Fans

The Minnesota Twins are now playing outside at the new Target Field. This billboard just appeared recently on the edge of their property. It’s visible from Interstate 394, but only from the back, so today while I was out biking I managed to get a good look at it from the front. It’s right at the entrance to the Cedar Corridor Bike Trail downtown, across from Lee’s Liquor (see below).

Light Rail Station at Hennepin

The Minneapolis light rail train waits for pedestrians and traffic before crossing Hennepin Avenue.  Notice the car on the right? Yes, Hennepin is now a two way as well as First Avenue. The new Target Stadium is barely visible in the top left.

The December 1st Theme day photo is Waiting.

Factory Doorway

November first brings another theme day for the world’s daily photo bloggers. This month’s theme is “Doorway.” Wouldn’t life be better if you had this door? I mean, seriously, what kind of projects could you get done with a garage door like this, a forklift and a freaking overhead crane. I’ve decided that I want an overhead crane for Christmas… Santa? Big o' Empty Cement Chair
The theme for July is “Empty” and this big old empty cement chair has been inviting me and discouraging me for years. It’s a block from my house, but I have never sat in it. Someday I’ll sit down, but until then, I’ll just ponder it.

Dr. Suess Path

Minnesota in January? Hardly. I snuck out for a week to Santa Catalina Island with Joe Paquet. Joe was teaching a landscape-painting workshop there and I went with him to photograph the students & the island and to get out of winter for a few days. This photo was taken during a day hike I took with Deb (her husband was taking the workshop). We walked to the Pacific side of the Island. It ended up being an 11-mile round-trip and we climbed from sea level to 1650ft. This is the trail we were on. I could scarcely believe how steep it was! The view was worth the climb, check back in as I share more photos this week.

Minneapolis - Best Photo of the Year 2008

Happy New Year! This photo first appeared on March 20th with this caption: Crossing over the skyway into the Hennepin County Government Center (home of the last SMZ) I found this incredible interplay of light and reflection. All the glass buildings were reflecting light on each other and off the far side of the skyway I was in. Even managed to catch a cloud trying to cross the street a block down (must have missed the last bus to St. Cloud).

Books

I’m running a few days behind, the City Daily Photo Blog Theme Day is the first but I couldn’t think of any compositions with books in them, so I kept looking. Alas, my own neighborhood proved fruitful again; this is Majors & Quinn Booksellers’ discount books rack outside the door on Hennepin Avenue in Uptown. Shot with my trusty 70-300mm VR, I got close enough to get a distinct DOF between the books and the street behind it. Stats: 140mm F5 1/25th at ISO 1000. Hand held baby, the human tripod strikes again!
