On one of my safaris across the lake I encountered this pair just sitting in the middle of the lake. Not fishing, just sitting. Nothing going on, no kite boarders, nothing really at all. I switched to my long lens to drag the shoreline in and moved to position the sun to catch the glint of the ice.

Just as I was ready to shoot, the one got up to take a picture of the other. The spectators themselves became the spectacle and they knew it too.

In the instant of the open shutter, when I’m actually working and intentionally doing nothing at the same time; the true photographic moment of zen, I called all three of us into question.

Wow, that’s gotta be just the worst John location outside of a small town beerfest.

Today’s Saturday Moment of Zen features my friends DJ and Werner.

Hundreds of kites filled the crisp winter air as little kids and big kids alike enjoyed this winter kite festival held on Lake Harriet in South Minneapolis.  Winter in Minnesota is an interesting thing. While many would elect to stay inside where it’s warm; true Minnesotans have so many things to choose from: kite festivals on  frozen lakes, winter carnivals, ice carving contests, cross-country ski races and pond hockey tournaments!

Ah, life on the edge of the Great Northern Plains. As one heads West, large sculptures appear on the sweaping vistas. Here’s one of my favorites in the lot of the large farm sculpture store. Can you guess what it is?
