Spring Flood 2
What looks like a board on the water in the bottom left is actually a picnic table top. Hidden Falls park is part of the flood plain in the Mississippi river valley through town, so it, um, floods.

Spring Flooding of the Mississippi

Spring is here and with it comes the melt. The Mighty Mississippi has swelled it’s banks. This is the parking lot of the Hidden Falls park on the East Bank South of the Ford Bridge.

Grain Belt Beer Sign Details

Remember the sign from yesterday? That was a 28mm shot, this one is 500mm — a little more detailed. Speaking of details, I took this shot while walking around the river area with my fellow blogger Dusty Lens. He’s posted another photo of this Minneapolis Icon and filled in a few details about it’s future. Turns out, you can buy this baby, ’cause she’s up for sale! The heirs of the William Eastman family are looking for a buyer willing restore the neon lights.

Not sure why Grain Belt isn’t jumping at the opportunity with a “save the sign” campaign; raffling off riverboat rides and getting tons of free publicity. I know a few photobloggers who would help for the cost of beer. Maybe one of the local tech schools could do it and build an promotional campaign around it — how cool would a video mix of the lit sign, inspirational stories and students working glass be? A couple old-timers watching on with a teary eyes… Anyhow, here’s some actual journalism about it: Historic Grain Belt Beer sign up for sale | Minnesota Public Radio NewsQ.

Bright Colors in a Brown World

The iconic Grain Belt Beer sign sits just across the Mississippi from downtown Minneapolis next to the Hennepin Ave Bridge. The sign used to be lit up at night, I wish they still kept it lit, that would be so much fun to shoot at night.

Taste of Minnesota July 4th Fireworks

From attop the Wabasha Bridge the Taste of Minnesota Festival on Harriet Island was visible across the river (on the left) as well as was the fireworks. Quite the sea of humanity joined me in celebrating independence day on a beautiful warm evening on the banks of the mighty Mississippi.

35w St. Anthony Bridge Construction

Matt and I went down to the St. Anthony Bridge construction site to take pictures on Sunday. It’s amazing to see them working on this monstrosity. 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Matt heard that they took four hours off for Christmas and one and a half for New Years. I have some close-ups of the guys working on it taken with the 200-500mm Tamron that I will show you later in the week.

Actually, it was better with snow

Back last Friday when I was looking for a shot of the falls for the theme day post, I wandered down in the river valley across from Minneapolis and found this miserable, desolate area right in the middle of the city. Everything down there was dead, brown and dirty. It actually made me miss the snow. Then on Monday when it snowed six inches of very wet slop & slush, I got over it.

Thanks again, for all the great comments on my April First Hoax.
