Luminary Pyramid from the Luminary Loppet
The Loppet this year was the busiest I've ever seen. The luminary sculptures are fascinating points of interest for the wandering crowds. For one night a year, the rather quiet lake is the busiest tourist attraction in town. I love that you can see all the people on their phones either taking pix or tweeting or something. This was shot by the PoleCam!3
Luminary Loppet Ice Henge From Above
A 'Loppet' is a cross-country ski race. Nobody knows that, but it's a nice short word and fits on a sign nicely. The 'Luminary Loppet' is an event in Minneapolis on Lake of the Isles in the evening, it started out as a track lit by 'luminaries' which are blocks of ice with candles in them. Then a group of ingenious people started building sculptures of ice and putting candles in them. This is the 'Ice Henge' which is the newest sculpture this year. Look closely, you can see me in the shot!1
Luminary Loppet Ice Henge at Night
Last night a the Luminary Loppet, I went out shooting with Werner, Rob and Matt. We all brought our Tripods for the night photos, except me. I brought the infamous tottering PoleCamTM and was able to pull off some long-ish exposures with the camera wobbling twenty feet in the air. This is the first time PoleCam has been out in a crowded place and it's amazing how much attention the contraption attracts. Stick around, more pix this week!0
Ice Henge - Loppet Ice Sculpture
The Luminary Loppet is this Tomorrow, Saturday the 5th. I went out to test my gear this afternoon and am proud to announce that PoleCamTM is ready for action!1
The Sea Serpent on Lake of the Isles
In the Northwest bay of Lake of the Isles is a Sea Serpent. Not just any serpent, this one is a regular. Ever since I moved to Uptown, I noticed that someone builds this serpent in the same place every year. A few weeks ago I actually caught the builder at work. Bob Flick lives near by and he has been building it since the 70s. His son used to help, but has since moved away. But Bob still gets down there every year and builds this local winter landmark. Thanks Bob!2
Loppet Luminaries Under Bridge
This scene looks so quiet and empty, but that's only an illusion and far from the truth. There were hundreds of skiers shuffling through, with a 30 second exposure, they disappear into the night. If you look closely (click to enlarge image) you will see odd ghosts of people in the middle.5
