Stairs, Down by the River

Here are the stairs from yesterday’s black & white photo. This photo makes the stairs look unnervingly precarious to climb and you know what? They are in real life too. They are located upriver of the Stone Arch Bridge on the St. Anthony side (East Bank).

It’s not a good place to hang out, but I went with my friend (and fellow blogger) Rob on a weekday morning, so I was safe. Unlike my stupid adventure on Thursday where I fell down a steep tree-covered hill out of site from an trail. I managed to catch a tree with the back of my knee while sliding down head-first. I vow not to climb muddy hills in spring any more, especially alone.

The Magic of Spring
Spring is such a wonderful time in the North Tundra, the snow melts to reveal nature’s stark, colorless beauty. It gets better once everything blooms.

The Machines and Their Jaunty Hats of Snow

Here’s the beauty of a large aperture at work. The soft glowing light of the city awash in snow. I found these soldiers on the lee of a Brueger’s Bagels, their little hats of snow unperturbed by wind. That’s the end of the series, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed sharing it with you.

Backstory on this series: On February 26th, Minneapolis had seven inches of snow drop in a couple of hours. I ventured out in the evening with one lens: a 50mm f1/1.4 — ISO 320, wide open at f1/1.4 between 1/20 & 1/80 sec. With all the variables removed, I was free to explore all the compositional opportunities of shooting hand-held in the dark during a snowstorm.

It's Safer if You Ride in the Street

The snow gently settles in,finding a good seat to watch the traffic parade by on such a quiet night in Uptown.

Eye on the Prize

The Media is watching you. Sure it’s hip edgy alternative media (owned by the Star Tribune) but it’s still watching you, waiting for it’s chance — you’ll slip up eventually.

Blasted Machines

Lightblasted by their tormentor, the brave newspaper machines steady their jaws as they stand guard; keeping McDonald’s from expanding any further into Uptown.

Oversaturated Mickey D's

Nothing says Uptown like a 24-hour McDonnald’s, right? In days of yore, when there was no Chino Latino and before The GAP became a Victoria’s Secret, McDonald’s had a little park out in front with picnic tables. This was the gathering-point for safety-pin-laden punks who cut their jeans to threads and bummed for cash. They were cute and fun to torment; how I miss the McPunks.

What Winter Hath Wrought

The snow gently gathers on the wrought iron railing outside of Famous Dave’s Bar-B-Que.
