Oversaturated Mickey D's

Nothing says Uptown like a 24-hour McDonnald’s, right? In days of yore, when there was no Chino Latino and before The GAP became a Victoria’s Secret, McDonald’s had a little park out in front with picnic tables. This was the gathering-point for safety-pin-laden punks who cut their jeans to threads and bummed for cash. They were cute and fun to torment; how I miss the McPunks.

Backstory on this series: On February 26th, Minneapolis had seven inches of snow drop in a couple of hours. I ventured out in the evening with one lens: a 50mm f1/1.4 — ISO 320, wide open at f1/1.4 between 1/20 & 1/80 sec. With all the variables removed, I was free to explore all the compositional opportunities of shooting hand-held in the dark during a snowstorm.

When you can make a McDonald’s an attractive place in the middle of a Minnesota winter, you know you’re one hell of a photographer!

I have been to this McDonalds! I remember going through the drive through here with my dad. He lives in Minneapolis, near the Walker Art Institute. I live in Michigan, I have lived here with my mom since I was six but I still feel like Minneapolis is my home … I think it’s the most beautiful city in the US. Anyway I just thought I’d share with you that this picture made me very happy, it brought back some good nostalgic memories.
