Another stop on the amazing Minneapolis bike trail system. This is one of over a dozen little bridges over the Minnehaha creek. The trail follows the creek from the base of Lake Harriet to the Minnehaha Falls. I’ll post a photo of the falls sometime, but it’s a perennial favorite of photography students and tourists, so I am a tad reticent to shoot it. Maybe I should see what it looks like in infrared…

This is the path from Minnehaha Falls to Fort Snelling. I love this path, it’s a destination bike ride for me. The surface is a little rough, but it’s fun to imagine the old trains chugging up this route on their way to Minneapolis. The new light-rail commuter train is just up the hill and you can sometimes hear it in the distance.

This is life in the Northern Deciduous Forest of Minnesota, a contiuous canopy of oak, beech, ash, aspen, maple and cottonwood trees surrounded by a wide variety of ground covering plants. As horrific as this place can get in the winter, summer more than makes up for it.

Here’s a rose from the Lyndale Park Rose Garden on the Northeast shore of Lake Harriet, Minneapolis in yesterday’s post.

I know flowers and sunsets are like puppies and kittens, but I had to share this one. It had rained over night and the raindrops were perfect!

This is the Heffelfinger Fountain in the Lyndale Park Rose Garden on the Northeast shore of Lake Harriet. It’s the second oldest rose garden in the U.S. and was designed by Theodore Wirth.

Yes, this is infrared. I’ve posted a few of these over time and y’all demanded more of them, so here ya go.

I’ll be bringing you photos of the parks and trails for most of the month; I’d like to prove the beauty of this city’s greenspaces before I begin the State Fair. The State Fair is big deal here, it runs from the 21st thru Sept 1st. There’s tons of fun there, but it’s mainly about things you really shouldn’t be eating — on a stick. Batter-fried cheese curds, Batter-fried candy bars, Batter-fried oreos, some obscenity called a scotch egg and walleye-on-a-stick are a few crowd pleasers of yore. The latter I’ve not seen, but my dad is fascinated by — since he won’t come up here, I gotta go find one. So enjoy the pretty pictures while they last.

ABC’s Good Morning America has a segment they call “Your Weekend Window” that featured the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes today. It’s a nice overview of why I love living here, except they make a big mistake — they call it the Chain of Lakes in the town of Calhoun, Minnesota. There’s no town of Calhoun around here, the “Chain of Lakes” are four lakes in Minneapolis; you’d think that the fact that all the people they interview are Minneapolis Park Board employees would be a hint. The Lakes are from top to bottom: Cedar Lake, Lake of the Isles, Lake Calhoun and Lake Harriet. Lake Nakomis is further down Minnehaha Creek.   Watch the video.

Fun fact about Lake Calhoun, it used to be named “Medoza” meaning  Lake of the loons, but after Secretary of War, John Calhoun sent the Army to survey the area around Fort Snelling in 1817, they named it after him.

The True Meaning of Cell Phone Sunday

My friend Dave pointed out that my skills as a photographer may appear to be the result of my good equipment, so I should get a cheap camera and prove otherwise. I suggested my cell phone camera, because it has a simple 640×480 camera and I always have it with me. “Perfect” Dave said, ”now do it.”
Simple rules: only uncropped, images directly from my cell phone. I do some post processing to sharpen up the image. The “camera” on the phone only has a “capture” button, so, at heart, it’s really a composition challenge. See past Cell Phone Sunday Photos.

Welcome to Friday, the last of the Obstruction series, it’s also the first of the month and a CDPB Theme Day! The Theme is “metal” and what better metal for Obstruction than a fence, chains and locks. This was taken at the construction site of the New UM Stadium. If you look closely, you’ll see that the locks are connected by short sections of chain. Each lock allows different people to access the site with their own lock. A rather inventive idea.

I hope you enjoyed Obstruction Week, now get out there and deal with your obstructions — defeat them or turn them into art, either way, they are there to either strengthen you or make you more interesting.
