I can't help but mention, in reference to your paragraph on tripods and shutter release cables... my Nikon D80, much to my surprise, came ready for a wireless remote cable release! I couldn't believe it. And the little remote was only like 20 bucks or so. I use it quite often, even in the daytime if I am using my 300mm. It's awesome. I would recommend it to anyone.
